Settlers relied on Indigenous hosts for their survival and sustenance during the early days of colonization. Gracious Indigenous communities provided food and shelter to the newcomers, teaching them how to live and sustain themselves on Turtle Island, as Indigenous peoples had done for millennia. However, as colonization progressed, Indigenous communities began to lose their cultural practices, ceremonies, and traditional knowledge of food and its preparation.
Indigenous food sovereignty involves providing people with healthy and culturally appropriate food using knowledge passed down from ancestors, reflecting a time when Indigenous communities embraced a place-based diet. It acknowledges colonization's history, recognizing that food and culture are dynamic and evolve over time. It is essential to consider the pre- and post-colonial influences when discussing Indigenous food, as the process of acculturation was historically inevitable.
